Overview

Gavin J Andrews PhD DSc is a Professor in the Department of Health, Aging and Society, and a former chair of that unit. A geographer by training, his research explores a range of phenomena through their production in space including aging people and things, health care work, conditions of the brain/mind, sports and fitness and health histories. As of 2023 he had published 140 academic papers, 60 book chapters, 5 journal special issues and 14 books, including Place and Professional Practice (Springer, 2021), COVID-19 and Similar Futures (Springer, 2021), Non-Representational Theory and Health (Routledge, 2018), Geographical Gerontology (Routledge, 2018), Ageing and Place (Routledge, 2005). Much of his work considers the development, state-of-the-art and future of geographical inquiry. He has been particularly influential in introducing non-representational and posthumanist theory in health and aging research, and more broadly in developing the field of ‘geographical gerontology’. In 2021 he was awarded a Higher Doctorate (Doctor of Science) from the University of Nottingham (UK) for the contributions he has made during his academic career.
