Overview

Dr. Sask is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, her research involves protein-material interactions, with a particular focus on cardiovascular and other blood-contacting medical devices. These devices are critical in managing cardiovascular diseases that are increasingly prevalent with the aging population, but suffer from complications including thrombosis, inflammation and infection. Dr. Sask’s team have developed surface modification and characterization strategies to improve materials and to determine protein interactions and the subsequent biological and cell reactions to devices. They’re interested in the role of protein conformation/orientation and protein glycosylation and how changes in proteins with aging may impact the response to materials and devices.
