Summary

The majority of Canadians wish to age in their own homes but health, mobility, and access challenges can make this difficult (Stats Canada, 2025). CHAH AI Care is an innovative, AI-powered health monitoring system that helps detect and predict falls, infections, and other adverse events. Earlier detection or prediction of these events may shorten or prevent hospitalizations and complications.

This project brings advanced Edge AI to an established homecare provider (Stay at Home Nursing) to deliver 24/7 monitoring and support to older adult clients and their caregivers. The McMaster Institute for Research on Aging (MIRA) will evaluate acceptability and feasibility of CHAH AI Care in this real-world setting, seeking to characterize the user population and its needs, leveraging data from Stay at Home Nursing (SAHN) homecare clients and other publicly available population data. The project will estimate the expected rates of adverse events in this population and evaluate CHAH AI Care’s ability to detect these events. This data will support the ultimate goal of developing a full-scale trial of the efficacy of CHAH AI, and its ability to detect and predict adverse events and subtle changes in mobility, cognition, and physical or mental health in real time – and determine the potential social, health and economic benefits of implementing this technology in the homes of Canadian older adults.
