MIRA represents McMaster at the 2nd international age-friendly universities conference in Dublin

March 21, 2018 – The McMaster Institute for Research on Aging joined other members of the international Age-Friendly University (AFU) network last week at the second international age-friendly universities conference in Dublin, University. The two-day conference, which was hosted by Dublin City University (DCU), saw higher education institutes, policymakers, government and civic society come together at Croke Park to discuss research, policy and practice around aging and accessibility.

Designing for dementia: A human-centred approach

March 15, 2018 – Long-term care residents with dementia commonly exhibit behaviours that range from restlessness and agitation to verbal and physical aggression. The McMaster Institute for Research on Aging (MIRA), together with the Gilbrea Centre for Studies in Aging and the Michael G. DeGroote Initiative for Innovation in Healthcare, are presenting a seminar on March 20 highlighting one team’s unique approach to managing these types of behaviours.

Driven to improve the lives of Canada’s seniors

March 14, 2018 – It was Brenda Vrkljan’s patients who inspired her to get into research. Working as an occupational therapist in a hospital serving a small Ontario community, Vrkljan noted the importance her patients put on returning to driving their car as soon as possible.

MIRA launches webinar series to highlight McMaster’s researchers in aging

March 14, 2018 – The McMaster Institute for Research on Aging (MIRA) is launching a webinar series that will feature new, mid-career and established researchers in aging from across all six Faculties. The webinars will provide a forum for discussion around aging research. Some examples of topics include design thinking strategies for research in aging, mobility and social isolation in older adults, and how to use big data to predict health decline and disability.

Scientific Director of MIRA named member of National Seniors Council

February 23, 2018 – Parminder Raina, a professor in the Department of Health Research Methods, Evidence, and Impact at McMaster University, specializing in the epidemiology of aging, has been appointed a member of the National Seniors Council (NSC) for three years. The NSC was established in 2007 to advise the Government of Canada on matters related to the health, well-being and quality of life of older adults.

McMaster’s Waterloo medical campus puts older and younger together to address education gap

February 14, 2018 – To build better relationships between future physicians and older adults, an elder care education program is being rolled out by the Waterloo Regional Campus of McMaster University’s Michael G. DeGroote School of Medicine. The program, launched in January, intends to promote intergenerational learning through three main initiatives: MacPAGE, Make a New Old Friend and the Green Bench.

Your dollars, your impact: assessing lung function in older Canadians

February 2, 2018 – A Lung Association grant has been awarded to MIRA member, Chris Verschoor, M.Sc, Ph.D. Verschoor and his team from McMaster University aim to use information from the Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging (CLSA) to undertake a thorough investigation of the lifestyle, health, disease and psychosocial factors that influence lung function in older Canadian adults, specifically those who do not have any obvious cause of lung health loss.

Hacking Health in Hamilton

January 29, 2018 – The McMaster Institute for Research on Aging is pleased to ​sponsor Hacking Health Hamilton, an annual hackathon that's designed to improve healthcare by inviting technology creators and healthcare professionals to collaborate on realistic, human-centric solutions to front-line problems. This year, the hackathon will focus on identifying new technologies and services to support healthy aging. It will take place over the weekend of February 9 - 11, and is expected to be a fun, hands-on event where small teams tackle tough problems in a supportive community of peers and mentors.

Can gaming tech improve the health of older and frail adults?

January 25, 2018 – When Paula Gardner and her now-PhD student, Stephen Surlin, tested out their new interactive software with seniors at Toronto’s Baycrest geriatric hospital a couple of years ago, they got concerned after 20 minutes.
