More than 80 community members gathered at the Toronto Reference Library on June 4 for a talk by MIRA researcher Milena Head on misinformation, digital trust and navigating today’s information landscape with confidence.
The talk was part of the Snacks & Science series by the MIRA | Dixon Hall Centre, which brings together McMaster researchers and older adults for engaging conversations on topics that matter to the community.
Through an engaging presentation and in conversation with the audience, Head discussed the science behind misinformation, how misleading information spreads and practical strategies for evaluating the credibility of information online.

Head’s research explores how people engage with technology and how more inclusive digital spaces can support connection, accessibility and confidence online. She is a professor of information systems at the DeGroote School of Business and director of the McMaster Digital Transformation Research Centre.
Attendees learned how to access resources, reflect on personal biases and develop skills to navigate digital information more confidently. The presentation encouraged thoughtful discussion about critical thinking in an increasingly connected world and highlighted the importance of digital literacy.
Following the presentation, attendees had the opportunity to ask questions, share their personal experiences and connect with one another, highlighting the value of creating accessible spaces where research and community can come together to explore timely issues and learn from one another.
The MIRA | Dixon Hall Centre thanks Milena Head for sharing her expertise, the Toronto Public Library for hosting us and attendees for making the afternoon such a success.
