MIRA Researcher Spotlight: Paula Gardner

July 24, 2019 – Paula Gardner is an associate professor in the Department of Communication Studies and Multimedia, the Asper Chair in Communications, and the director of the Pulse Lab at McMaster University. Her research interests include digital culture, biometric technological practices and feminist media studies. ​She leads the ABLE project (Arts Based Therapies Enabling Longevity for Geriatric Outpatients), which, in partnership with the McMaster Institute for Research on Aging (MIRA) and the GERAS Centre, brings together researchers from five McMaster faculties to develop technologies that will enhance the cognitive, physical and emotional health of frail older adults.

Partnership created to uncover reasons for frailty in aging populations

July 10, 2019 – The Canadian Frailty Network, the Canadian Longitudinal Study of Aging (CLSA), the McMaster Institute for Research on Aging (MIRA) and Metabolon, Inc. have announced a collaborative partnership to develop a $4-million research program. This will perform large-scale metabolomic profiling and biomarker identification on samples from Canada’s largest and most comprehensive study on aging.

June 24, 2019 – In October 2017, McMaster became the second Canadian University to join the Age-Friendly University (AFU) network, a global body of institutions committed to becoming more universally accessible. This week, the McMaster Institute for Research on Aging (MIRA) is releasing the Age-Friendly University Report, outlining steps McMaster is taking to improve the accessibility of the campus, understand the needs of older adults coming to campus, and encourage the participation of older adults in education, research, health, and cultural activities.

Hamilton memory care centre will serve as living lab for researchers in aging

June 14, 2019 – A new seniors residence in Hamilton designed to improve the quality of life of its ​residents.​ Set to open its doors in December 2020,​ Ressam Gardens will also act as a space where partners, ​including the McMaster Institute for Research on Aging (MIRA), ​can develop and test advanced smart systems that may positively impact this population.

Program with community volunteers promising in reducing health-care use by older adults

May 6, 2019 – Incorporating community volunteers into the health-care system shows promise in reducing health-care usage by older adults through a shift from hospitals to primary care, according to research from McMaster University. Results of the Health TAPESTRY (Health Teams Advancing Patient Experience: Strengthening Quality) project were published today in the Canadian Medical Association Journal (CMAJ).
