Physical and mental health correlates in aging adults with autism

2025 MIRA PhD Scholarship

Karen Joseph, Faculty of Science

Summary

Autism research has historically focused on children, leaving a critical gap in understanding older adults’ with the condition experiences and needs. This research aims to identify key factors influencing brain function, mental health, and well-being as autistic individuals age.

As part of the Aging and Autism study at Holland Bloorview Hospital, this project will follow 120 autistic and 120 neurotypical adults aged 40 to 75 over three years. Participants will undergo comprehensive evaluations, including cognitive tests, mental health surveys, and brain scans. This project will explore how physical health factors, such as sleep, nutrition, and physical fitness interact with brain health outcomes like memory and executive functions, as well as changes in brain structure. By comparing these interactions in adults with and without autism, we aim to uncover the unique challenges faced by autistic individuals as they age. These findings will guide the development of evidence-based support systems to promote healthy aging and improve quality of life for this underserved population.
