Fuelled by a growing reputation for its rare combination of research excellence and high-quality teaching, McMaster has been ranked 78th in the world by the Times Higher Education’s influential World University Rankings.

The University jumped 35 spots from its previous ranking – the biggest improvement of any of the institutions listed among the top 100 in the world.

McMaster has dramatically improved its standing in all three of this year’s most respected university reports.

Earlier this summer, McMaster was ranked 66th in the world and third in Canada by the Shanghai Jiao Tong Academic Ranking of World Universities, improving its standing by 13 places. It jumped to 140th in the world from 149th in the QS World University Rankings.

With more than 18,000 universities in the world, McMaster’s results place the university in the top one per cent.

“These are excellent results, of which the entire McMaster community should be proud,” says University President Patrick Deane. “Our goal at McMaster is to improve the health and well-being of all people while contributing to our global knowledge base and advancing the societies and the world in which we live. Our unique approach has earned us a reputation as one of the world’s leading universities. We’re proud of the milestones we’ve achieved over the past 130 years, excited by the progress we continue to make, and focussed on the impact we can achieve as we work together to create a brighter world.”

Global rankings take many factors into account, including the number of cited and published research papers, academic performance, teaching, and international outlook.
