Two MIRA members presented with prestigious Teaching Award

October 4, 2017 – Kimberley Dej, Associate Professor in the School of Interdisciplinary Science, and Professor of Information Systems Milena Head from the DeGroote School of Business are two of the recipients to have been presented with Teaching and Academic Librarianship Awards. Dej and Head are both McMaster University Faculty Members and members of the McMaster Institute for Research on Aging.

The Labarge Centre for Mobility in Aging within MIRA supports seven new interdisciplinary projects

September 29, 2017 – Can cognitive age predict the use of Fitbits and other wearable devices in older adults? How can better understanding of bone density at the nanoscale lead to longer-lasting hip and knee implants? Can smart joint technology predict risk for falling and other mobility-related issues? McMaster to host Walrus Talks Mobility event in downtown Hamilton

September 14, 2017 – The McMaster Institute for Research on Aging (MIRA) and The Walrus Foundation are confronting the topic of mobility within Canada’s aging population. On October 5, 2017, eight speakers including doctors, scientists, an Olympian, and a futurist, will present their visions of a more inclusive society for The Walrus Talks Mobility. This event is part of the popular nationwide Walrus Talks series. McMaster University Presents the Walrus Talks Mobility will take place on October 5, 2017 at 7 p.m. at the David Braley Health Sciences Centre (100 Main Street West, Hamilton). Tickets are $12 ($6 for students) and can be purchased online at thewalrus.ca/the-walrus-talks-mobility.

Scientists develop new supplement that can repair, rejuvenate muscles in older adults

July 18, 2017 – Whey protein supplements aren’t just for gym buffs according to new research from McMaster University. When taken on a regular basis, a combination of these and other ingredients in a ready-to-drink formula have been found to greatly improve the physical strength of a growing cohort: senior citizens.

MIRA researcher spotlight: Dawn Bowdish

June 30, 2017 – Dawn Bowdish is a Canada Research Chair in Aging and Immunity and an Associate Professor at McMaster University in the department of Pathology and Molecular Medicine. Her research focuses on age-associated inflammation and developing a better understanding of how the immune system fights bacterial pneumonia in older adults. She has been a MIRA member since November 2016.
