Gilbrea Centre for Studies in Aging

Based within the Faculty of Social Sciences at McMaster University, the Gilbrea Centre serves as a critical interdisciplinary hub of research, teaching and community engagement. Gilbrea’s mission is to improve all aspects of the lives of older adults living in the community and in long-term care by linking research, education, policy and practice with local, national and global initiatives.

LIVELab

Research performance space for cutting-edge analysis of human interaction.

The LIVELab within the McMaster Institute for Music and the Mind is a 106-seat Research Performance Space equipped with advanced technology (EEG, motion capture, active acoustics) that facilitates the simultaneous study of behavioral, physiological, and brain responses in performers and audience members. Creative performance is a framework that helps researchers understand broader scientific questions about child development, aging, learning, mental health and movement. The LIVELab enables cutting-edge analysis of human interaction, bridging the gap between arts and science.

Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging (CLSA)

Canada’s largest study of aging

The Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging (CLSA) is a large, national research platform on health and aging allowing researchers to answer critical questions on the biological, medical, psychological, social, lifestyle and economic aspects of aging, disability and disease. The CLSA follows 51,338 people who were aged 45-85 at recruitment, for 20 years. Through its large sample size, detailed data collection and longitudinal design, the CLSA enables research on the complex interplay among health determinants.

Physical Activity Centre of Excellence (PACE)

Safe, welcoming exercise and rehab for older adults

At PACE, more than 200 students work alongside our team of health professionals and staff in a McMaster University specialized exercise and rehabilitation centre for seniors, people undergoing cardiac rehabilitation, cancer patients and survivors, and people with MS or spinal cord injuries. We provide community members with a welcoming, safe, supportive environment. Along with achieving their health and wellness goals, community members and students create supportive bonds to aid each other in their journeys.

Dixon Hall is a multi-service agency, and serves more than 10,000 people annually, impacting the lives of the most vulnerable and the most at-risk members of our community. Dixon Hall works with at-risk youth, seniors, adults with physical and health disabilities, people who need housing, individuals searching for employment, those with mental health issues and newly immigrated individuals and their families.
