McMaster researchers Martin Gibala and Mark Tarnopolsky were featured in a cover story for Time Magazine last September.

In the article, Gibala, professor of kinesiology at McMaster shared the results of his research. His findings revealed that short bursts of exercise (20 seconds) followed by brief recovery periods are just as effective as a typical 50-minute exercise session at improving heart function and blood sugar control.

The article also highlighted the research contributions of Tarnopolsky, a professor in the Department of Pediatrics and Medicine. He has found that exercise is the “most effective, potent way we can improve” quality and duration of life. Beginning with studies in mice, Dr. Tarnopolsky has shown that the therapeutic effects of exercise, such as improved skin and eye health, are also extended to humans.

“It’s exciting to have our research featured in Time Magazine,” Tarnopolsky said. “We hope that our message about the importance of exercise at all ages will be heard far and wide. It’s a prescription that is far more effective than any drug on the market.”
