The McMaster Institute for Research on Aging (MIRA) has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Hamilton’s Shalom Village in order to advance and promote healthy aging through joint research and educational activities.

Signed on April 2017, the MoU outlines the following areas of cooperation between the signing parties: shared outreach initiatives, such as events and communication materials; exploration of student placements; and collaborative research projects, among other activities.

“[This partnership] is an exciting opportunity to work alongside researchers and community leaders with the goal to develop effective and innovative strategies to help Hamilton seniors age successfully,” said Jeanette O’Leary, CEO of Shalom Village.

“MIRA shares a commitment with Shalom Village to advance healthy aging through research and education,” said Dr. Parminder Raina, MIRA’s Scientific Director.

Shalom Village is a non-profit organization that provides a host of services for mature adults within the context of Jewish culture and values, including Kashrut. Services include long-term care, assisted living and convalescent programs designed to help people recover from illness or injury and rebuild strength and independence.

The McMaster Institute for Research on Aging serves as overarching infrastructure to support aging research, education and community outreach, as well as offering an entry point to McMaster University’s research platforms in aging. MIRA is also home to a new centre of interdisciplinary research, the Labarge Centre for Mobility in Aging, which aims to examine the biological, behavioural, technological and environmental factors that can affect individual and community mobility in older adults.
