Dr. P.J. White, research leader at designCORE, a research centre at the Institute of Technology Carlow in Ireland, has received the James M Flaherty Award from the Irish Canadian University Foundation (ICUP) scholarship, which facilitates scholarly exchange. For five weeks, starting November 5, White will live in Hamilton and collaborate with the McMaster Institute for Research on Aging (MIRA) at McMaster University.

“The James M Flaherty Award from the Irish Canadian University Foundation (ICUF) scholarship will assist me to conduct research which will have mutual benefit for both institutes,” said White, who holds a PhD in Product Design, specifically in the areas of Design Ethnography and Product Design for older adults.

Since 2016, designCORE and MIRA have worked closely to mobilize design thinking approaches within interdisciplinary teams working in aging research across all six Faculties at McMaster. During his time in Canada, White will assess the influence of their approach and develop design capabilities that can be used moving forward for interdisciplinary research between designCORE, the Institute of Technology Carlow and MIRA.

“We are thrilled to welcome PJ to McMaster,” said Laura Harrington, Managing Director of MIRA. “Our partnership with IT Carlow has influenced MIRA’s approach to fostering interdisciplinary and user-focused research in aging, and we are looking forward to spending dedicated time with PJ to expand the impact of our collaboration,” said Laura Harrington, Managing Director of MIRA.

Scholarships are awarded to candidates of the highest caliber, whose work relates to both Irish and Canadian interests, and provides the potential to develop ongoing international links in that area. The foundation supports preeminent scholars and academics who are leaders, or future leaders, in their academic or post-academic professional field.
