Recruitment of participants for a study in a community setting: Optimizing success

Need to manage for ethical issues such as recruiting vulnerable populations and 1st and 2nd order contact as primary researcher

Can be challenging to reach community-based participants – issues of access, legitimacy and trust

Gatekeepers can facilitate access and trust between participants and researcher

Need to be prepared to spend considerable time in community in order to reach sample size targets
-
Hidden costs of community recruitment – travel, parking, after hours, incentives, printing/business cards – be aware at start of study and plan accordingly
