Anna Garnett, a PhD student in the School of Nursing at McMaster (supervisor Dr. Jenny Ploeg), delivered a talk on her work entitled:

Recruitment of participants for a study in a community setting: Optimizing success

  • Need to manage for ethical issues such as recruiting vulnerable populations and 1st and 2nd order contact as primary researcher

  • Can be challenging to reach community-based participants – issues of access, legitimacy and trust

  • Gatekeepers can facilitate access and trust between participants and researcher

  • Need to be prepared to spend considerable time in community in order to reach sample size targets

  • Hidden costs of community recruitment – travel, parking, after hours, incentives, printing/business cards – be aware at start of study and plan accordingly
