With great sadness, the McMaster Institute for Research on Aging (MIRA) would like to acknowledge the passing of Dr. Matthew Woolhouse (1965-2023). Dr Woolhouse was a member of MIRA, an  inaugural member of MIRA’s executive committee, and Associate Professor of Music at McMaster.

Dr. Woolhouse joined McMaster University in 2011, where he pursued intertwined fields of music and science, translating them expertly into the aging research sphere. His research included study of implicit musical learning, the impacts of active engagement with music and dance, including benefits to those with movement disorders such as Parkinson’s Disease. He was a beloved teacher and research leader and conducted the McMaster Symphony Orchestra.

We thank Dr. Woolhouse for his contributions to the launch of MIRA as a research institute and to aging research at McMaster. Through his work may his song play for years to come.
