Summary

Falls are a leading cause of injury, hospitalization and loss of independence among older adults. Walking speed, often called the “sixth vital sign,” is a powerful predictor of fall risk but is rarely measured outside specialized clinics. This study will determine how to help older adults better understand their mobility and fall risk using a privacy-preserving radar device used in clinical settings that measures walking speed in seconds and provides immediate, accessible feedback and personalized exercise recommendations. We will work with older adults, fitness professionals and clinicians to co-design clear educational materials through usability testing and a consensus process. Unlike previous approaches, this radar device requires no wearables, cameras or specialized staff, making it practical for community settings. By helping older adults “know their walking speed,” this project aims to support earlier action, better exercise choices and ultimately reduce falls — while improving independence, safety, confidence and quality of life.
